EXTRACT:

This essay reflects the knowledge and system of meaning in the artwork of Valentin Alexandrovich Firsov Shabaeff (b. Russia 1891, d. Montreal 1978) a member of an East Slavic ethnic group native to Russia who immigrated to Canada during the Interwar years, set up studios and produced his specific brand of artwork. Its purpose is to disclose Western art historical and craft perspectives via the translation of Slavic pictorials in his ceramic tile art, in order to unearth some rationale for his exclusion in the spheres of art and craft discourse during the lengthy period of his artistic engagement in the nation.
